If the tank itself is leaking, or the unit is well over 10 years old, replacement usually makes more sense. Most other problems — elements, thermostats, valves — can be repaired.
My water heater is leaking. What should I do?
Turn off the cold-water valve on top of the heater and turn off the power (or set a gas unit to pilot). Then call us.
